Drifting on Life’s Seas
“And a man shall be as an hiding place from the wind, and a covert from the tempest; as rivers of water in a dry place, as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.”
Isaiah 32:2
Off the coast of Newfoundland an owl as white as snow sat alone on a drifting piece of Iceberg. It had been days since the desolate chunk of ice had broken away from the field. Cold, weak and frightened, the owl was drifting to its demise. Then it saw the freighter ship in the distance. The troubled bird lost its fear of humans in the presence of its greater fear of death. It made a great dash for life. With little strength it flew like a sputtering plane, and then fell exhausted on the deck. It was totally at the mercy of the ship’s crew. The Captain, a kindly man, cared for it, and later set it free in the haven to fly and live again.
Do you ever feel like that owl; like you have drifted too far in a world that has grown cold? Many would love to return to the life that they once knew where faith was simple, love was real, and life was nestled in the warmth of family and friends.
There is an old Ship that sails the sea; she is called the Ship of Zion; others call it the church; and she has been the salvation of many drifters. We need not fear her crew, or her Captain: He is Jesus, and his name is Love. No one is turned away that comes to Him.
It is true that people need the Lord. It is also true that people need each other. We share life; not every song has to be a solo. Who hasn’t been down at some point in life? I’m thankful for our friends who are there to help pick us up. In the church we bear one another’s burdens, wipe away tears, laugh together.
Sure we might have to worship with a grumpy out of sorts saint once in a while; but they have to deal with us also. I would rather be on board the ship with the rest of the broken and healing souls who have found the Lord, than be drifting by myself on a cold piece of ice upon life’s sea.
“I see friends shaking hands saying, ‘how do you do’
They’re really saying ‘I love you’
And I think to myself, ‘what a wonderful world”
