Resurrecting with Christ
“The next day (the Sabbath) the chief priest and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate… They had requested to have guards placed at the tomb. Pilate gave them soldiers and told them to make the grave as secure as possible.”
Matthew 27:62-66
This is the only Biblical reference to the Saturday of Holy Week.
They were worried that someone might steal the body of Jesus. Then it would be reported that He was alive. We need not think that dirty politics, drama, and creating whatever facts needed to twist the truth, is a new thing. People have always been very handy with it (then and now).
Jesus’ last words on the cross were, “It is finished.” The chief priest could not say that, but, oh how they wished that they could. “It is finished” is a Holy term that evil will never be able to say. Those who choose the dishonest and evil route will always have one more thing to try to cover up.
When God created the world He rested because it was finished, and it was good. Jesus would “sit down” at the right hand of the Father because salvations work was finished, and it is good. The day is coming when our victorious Lord will say to evil, “It is over” (not finished, but OVER) gone, never to return again!
Today, on the Saturday before Easter, you and I can experience complete forgiveness of sin, and what it means to be resurrected with Christ unto new life. Remember that on that dark Sabbath day, one of the happiest people in history was a thief who was walking with Jesus in Paradise. “Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with Christ; we shall also live with Him.” (2 Timothy 2:11)
