The Freedom of Forgiving – Part 1
“And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors..”
Matthew 6:12
Forgiveness is a most beautiful word, until we have something to forgive! Something within us so powerfully clings to wrongs suffered, and longs to strike back with vengeance at those who have maligned us.
Precisely because this desire is strong, our Lord Jesus Christ on numerous occasions dealt with the need to forgive. We regularly pray “and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who have trespassed against us.” Matthew 6:12
Perhaps His most important message about the subject of forgiveness comes to us in Matthew 18:21-35, the parable of the unforgiving servant.
Remember that the Lord first taught that His disciples to exhibit childlike humility, Matthew 18:1-20, and that the goal is always to win the outcast and restore fellowship.
