Fishers of Men
“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”
“Matthew 4:19”
When our children were little, we lived in a parsonage that had a small stream behind it. The boys would fish in it even though we were sure that there were no fish to be caught. Amy wanted to fish, but they let her know that girls can’t fish. One day I saw her running to the house with a fishing pole in her hand. I went to see what was going on and discovered that she had somehow snagged a fish. You can be sure that she would not let the boys forget the fact that she was the one who caught the fish, and she did it without bait.
We are called to be fishers of people. I am fearful that many of today’s churches have lost the passion for fishing. We are so sidetracked with issues that we have forgotten Jesus’ words, “I will make you fishers of people.”
I believe that these are the best days for the church to grow. The fields are ripe for harvesting. If the workers will get back out in the fields, the Lord is ready to add daily those who are being saved.
It is said that D.L. Moody once was criticized for his “crude” evangelism. He responded by saying, “I like my way of doing evangelism better than your way of not doing it.” Perhaps it’s time to lay down some of the busyness of our churches, and hang up a sign, “Gone Fishing with Jesus.”
“Risen Christ, you send us fishing!
God’s great sea is everywhere.
you have guided us in mission,
you have given love to share.
Through the years, our church has heard you,
we have answered your great call:
“Cast your nets where I have told you.
Bring my Word of love to all!”
Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
