COME TO ME

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

“Matthew 11: 28-30”

Today, we celebrate the ones who labor by the sweat of their brow. The people who work hard and long while often carrying unbearable loads.

Burdens come our way; Sometimes by our own doing, others just show up and refuse to leave. To pray for a trouble free life is not taught in the Bible. You will not find the first example of it in the Gospel, or New Testament Church. To pray for the yoke of Christ is a much better prayer.

Once an ox was pulling a plow while wearing a yoke that did not fit correctly. The wood had rubbed the hide until it had a very sore place; yet the burdened animal was forced to keep plowing. Then a Savior came, and with compassion He placed His yoke upon the weary animal. The field had not changed, but the plowing became easier because the ox now wore the gentle yoke of a kind master.

When we plow through life on our own we are like oxen wearing the wrong yoke. There is a better way for us. Jesus said, “Come to me all who are tired from carrying heavy loads and I will give you rest. Place my yoke upon your shoulders and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble. Then you will find rest for your soul…”

Best of all, when you take Jesus’ yoke, you get Him. You may still have the same load, but you also have a constant friend to help you. He will show you the better way to carry the burden and press on until the work is done. Then, when the field of life is plowed, all God’s children will gather and sing, “Hallelujah” when we lay our burdens down.

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
