The Promise!
Hebrews 6:13-20
The Certainty of God’s Promise
13 When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself, 14 saying, “I will surely bless you and give you many descendants.”[a] 15 And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised.
16 People swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument. 17 Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath. 18 God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged. 19 We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, 20 where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.
Titus 1:2, “In hope of eternal life, which God that cannot lie, promised before the world began.”
2 Peter 3:13, “Nevertheless we, according to His promise look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.”
What was that promise?
Genesis 12:1-3
The Call of Abram
12 The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.
2 “I will make you into a great nation,
and I will bless you;
I will make your name great,
and you will be a blessing.[a]
3 I will bless those who bless you,
and whoever curses you I will curse;
and all peoples on earth
will be blessed through you.”
Refer to Matthew 1:1-15, and 16, “And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called Christ.”
“So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; and from David into the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon unto Christ are fourteen generations.” (Matthew 1:17)
FORTY-TWO GENERATIONS!!
God’s promise applies not only of His promise to our Spiritual Father, Abraham, but also to His word in all Scripture. Because the Bible is God’s inspired word, it is completely true and trustworthy. The truth of God’s word is inherent in the very words and sentences of the Bible. Jesus himself taught that Scripture is God’s inspired Word to even the smallest detail. “For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth shall pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.” (Matthew 5:18) Our Lord also affirmed that all the He had received from His Father is true, “The Son can do nothing of himself, but what He seeth the Father do, for what things soever He doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.” (John 5:19)
FORTY-TWO GENERATIONS, plus the 29 generations from Christ to our present time! SEVENTY ONE GENERATIONS, God has remained completely faithful!
“And behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land: for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.” (Genesis 28:15)
“Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed, for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” (Isaiah 41:10)
