“They shall go hindmost with their standards.” Numbers 2:31
“Bringing up the rear” was a position assigned to the tribe of Dan. I cannot imagine the whining and fussing that would happen today should a group of us be told that we are to be the cow’s tail wherever we travel.
Hindmost may not have the glamour as that of being up front. In a parade the one who walks behind the horses with a shovel may not have people waving at them, but they are doing important work. Christians hold various positions in the kingdom, and our Lord has a special word for the faithful souls who must walk with the tribe of Dan: “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”
Two of our best friends are always in the hindmost place wherever we go; “Surely, goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life.”
God Bless the people who work behind the scenes, stand in the shadows, and pray for others to do great things in this world. These are the ones who do not bury their talents, but who invest them in the lives of those who march ahead. They walk behind and gather the broken and frightened ones in arms of love, and they wipe tears from those who stumble and skin their soul. They even help clean up someone else’s mess.
May we have this same mind as Christ who did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant.
“Others, Lord, yes others,
Let this my motto be;
Help me to live for others
That I may live like Thee.”
Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
