Each in Front of His Own House

The prophet Haggai rebuked the apathy and indifference of those who said, “It is not time to build the Lord’s house,” while building fine houses for themselves. In Nehemiah’s day, the day of rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem, the people had a mind to work.

Many Christians have a mind to work, leading some to commit their lives to preach the gospel, but for many, many more, the call is not to the pulpit or foreign fields of ministry or even to organized programs of personal evangelism, but a call to work in “front of his own house” (Nehemiah 3:28).

Susan B. Warner (1868) reminds us: “Jesus bids us shine, then, for all around, Many kinds of darkness in this world abound:
Sin, and want, and sorrow—we must shine, You in your small corner, and I in mine”—each in front of his own house.
