Broken-Hearted Jesus
We are familiar with Matthew’s quoting of Psalm 69:21: “There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it (Matt 27:28).
But there is more to the the quotation: “You know how I am scorned, disgraced and shamed; all my enemies are before you. Scorn has broken my heart and has left me helpless; I looked for sympathy, but there was none, for comforters, but I found none” (Psa 69:19-20).
Not even God could comfort him, for Jesus had to drink the cup we would otherwise have to drink. He cried out, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken me.”
