“Whose son are you, young man?” see 1 Samuel 17:58
Two of life’s most important questions that we must answer are, Who do you say that Jesus is, and are you a child of God.
“Whose son are you, young man?” If I had been asked that when I was growing up, it probably meant trouble. Identity is important to most people. There was a time when you would be known by who your parents were and where you lived. In our transient society that isn’t necessarily the case anymore.
When Jesus was baptized, God said, “This is my Son.” The very first temptation that Jesus faced was the temptation to doubt his identity. “If you are God’s Son, then…” “IF” can be a powerful two letter word. To have fallen to it would have stopped Jesus’ ministry at the very beginning.
It is also important that we know who we are, and whose we are. Our baptism identifies us as Christians. We can say, “I am a child of God.” But, we must know that doesn’t come without challenges. There are times that we too are tempted to doubt this wonderful truth. When challenging times come, it is helpful to reaffirm that we know whose we are, and nothing in this world can take that from us.
Life’s battles are won when our identity is settled in our heart. David defeated Goliath by faith in his Heavenly Father. Jesus defeated Satan, and even death, by the absolute knowledge that He was the Son of God. Child of God, whatever you are going through, never forget who you are, and whose you are.
“Let the saints rejoice with my raptured spirit,
I am a child of God;
I will testify, that the world may hear it,
I am a child of God.
I am a child of God, I am a child of God;
I have washed my robes in the cleansing fountain,
I am a child of God.”
