ARE YOU READY FOR THE FAMINE?
Solomon said, “One who is full loathes honey from the comb, but to the hungry even what is bitter tastes sweet” (Prov 27:7). America has lost its appetite for the spiritual, not because it is well-nourished, but because two generations (Boomers and Gen X) have stuffed themselves with the empty calories of humanism, materialism, and health-and-wealth religion as peddled in pulpits catering to narcissism.
In a land where 88% of the households own a Bible, with an average of 4.7 Bibles per household, only 37% of the population reads it at least once a week, and 39% of the millennials (those born after 1980) have never read it. Only 35% of this group believes the Bible contains everything a person needs to live a meaningful life.
When Israel lost its appetite for the spiritual, God warned them through Amos:
“The time is surely coming,” says the Sovereign Lord,
“when I will send a famine on the land—
not a famine of bread or water
but of hearing the words of the Lord.
People will stagger from sea to sea
and wander from border to border
searching for the word of the Lord,
but they will not find it (8:11-12).
