Loud Holy Silence
“Do not shout; do not even talk,” Joshua commanded. “Not a single word from any of you until I tell you to shout. Then shout!” Joshua 6:10 NLT
Holy Silence can be so loud if we will only listen. A Quaker pastor said that sometimes visitors to their church were surprised by, and uncomfortable with, silence. Ecclesiastes says, “There is a time to keep silence, and a time to speak.” May the Lord help us to discern the times; life’s battles may depend on it.
A silent army paraded around the enemy in complete silence. It was enough that God was with them. His presence was voice enough to cause the enemy to tremble.
“Be still and know that I am God.” God has never needed our defense in any argument or situation. He is more than able to take care of Himself. What he expects from us is trust and obedience; that is faith.
Nothing that we can do will make His glory brighter. It would be like bringing our own flashlights to help brighten the noonday sun. It is God’s glory that illuminates our darkness.
A humble “Yes Lord” is far greater than a thousand proud words. We might do well to practice “Holy Silence” so we can hear the voice of God.
“Be still, my soul, thy God doth undertake
To guide the future as He has the past
Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake
All now mysterious shall be bright at last.”
Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
