Job 4:4
“Your words have supported those who stumbled; you have strengthened faltering knees”
“Those Who Stumbled”
The Moffatt Translation says, “Your words have put people back on their feet.”
The kind man was down, hurting and could not get back up. His miserable comforters were saying, “In your day you were generous and helpful to so many. You got people back up on their feet, but you cannot help yourself.”
Even though the words were not kindly spoken; they still were a great compliment to this man who God called “perfect and upright” in his sight. The man who could have lived for himself in pleasure had lived a life of helping others get their life back. Job was in good company. They would say of our Lord, “He saved others, but he cannot save himself.”
Who are the people who helped us when we were down? Who lifted our spirit out of depression, gave us another chance; or the break that we needed. Who stayed around when everyone else left? Who wiped the tears from our eyes? Thank God for all those people who have been there for us.
The hymn says, “Help me in all the work I do to ever be sincere and true, and know that all I’d do for you must needs be done for others.”
Walk closely with Jesus and we are soon to learn the meaning of a faith that is committed to helping people back up and putting them on their feet again. We can begin with a simple rule for all who follow Christ: “Do no harm.”
“You got to try a little kindness,
Yes show a little kindness,
Just shine your light for everyone to see.
And if you try a little kindness,
Then you’ll overlook the blindness,
Of narrow-minded people on the narrow-minded streets.”
“Your words have supported those who stumbled; you have strengthened faltering knees” (Job 4:4).
