Pretty Is As Pretty Does
Variations of the saying, “Pretty is as pretty does,” meaning looks are not as important as behavior, were recorded in 1774 in the American Journal of a Lady of Quality.
Solomon said it best: “Like a gold ring in a pig’s snout is a beautiful woman without discretion” (Proverbs 11:22). Some have identified an obsession with physical beauty as the last stage in the collapse of a culture. If that is true, we are on a steep downhill slope. Cosmetic sales in the United States have increased from $40 billion in 2002 to $94 billion in 2024.
As one preacher said, “A little paint never hurt any old barn,” but pretty still is as pretty does.
