Godly Parenting
“My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline or be weary of his reproof, for the Lord reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights” (Prov 3:11-12, ESV).
The writer of Hebrews quotes this proverb and elaborates: “No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it” (Heb 12:11).
There are three common errors practiced in disciplining children. First, indulgent parents, in the name of love, fail to discipline; second, sentimental parents try to practice “sting-free”””””Lord’s discipline; and third, angry, frustrated parents discipline to relieve their own frustration or anger.
If discipline is pleasant for the child, it is not discipline. If discipline is pleasant for the parent, it is abuse. Godly parenting is responsible parenting done in love for the child’s good.
