My Redeemer Lives

Isaiah catalogs a long list of evils in his day: extreme wealth of some and extreme poverty of others, corruption in government, rampant drunkenness and immorality, empty, compromising religion, and indifference to it all by those in power (Isa 1:21-23).

Apparently, some were looking to the arm of man to save them, prompting Isaiah to write, “Stop trusting in mere humans, who have but a breath in their nostrils. Why hold them in esteem?” (Isa 2:22, NIV).

We don’t have to be cynics, believing that there are grand conspiracies behind every closed door in Washington—or any other capital of the world, but we should not look to the mighty men of the world to right all wrongs.

Thirteen times, Isaiah reminds Israel that the Lord is their Redeemer. When cynicism threatens to engulf us, let us join with Job: “But as for me, I know that my Redeemer lives, and that he will stand upon the earth at last. And I know that after this body has decayed, this body shall see God! Then he will be on my side! Yes, I shall see him, not as a stranger, but as a friend! What a glorious hope!” (Job 19-25-27, TLB).
