It Ain’t Over Till It’s Over

At an age when many men might have considered backing off and letting the younger generation do the fighting, Caleb, at age 85, was looking for mountains to climb and battles to win. He said: “So now give me this hill country of which the Lord spoke on that day, for you heard on that day how the Anakim were there, with great fortified cities. It may be that the Lord will be with me, and I shall drive them out just as the Lord said” (Josh 14:10-12, ESV).

When Caleb said, “Give me this hill country,” he was not asking for others to do the fighting while he lounged by the sea. He was ready to kick some bad boys off the mountain.

Here are just a few other people who made their mark late in life:

• Colonel Sanders began KFC at the age of 65.
• Laura Ingalls Wilder was 65 when she started the Little House series of books.
• Burton Coffman began writing his verse-by-verse commentaries on the entire Bible when he was 66 and finished them when he was 87.

Yogi Berra, who was still coaching at age 80, once said, “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over.” Stay in the game until it is over.
