I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing

When we hear the words “I’d like to teach the world to sing,” we probably think of what was the most expensive commercial ever made at the time, a commercial about Coca-Cola.

David was more ambitious, inviting the entire universe to sing the praises of God: “Praise the Lord, you his angels, you mighty ones who do his bidding, who obey his word. Praise the Lord, all his heavenly hosts, you his servants who do his will. Praise the Lord, all his works everywhere in his dominion. Praise the Lord, my soul” (Psa 103:20-22, NIV).

How much more can even the humblest believer call upon the universe to praise God today, for Peter writes:

Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls. Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look (1 Pet 1:8-12, ESV).

Let’s teach the world to sing by letting the joy of our hearts flow freely from our lips.
