“LIVING BY FAITH

Habakkuk struggled with God’s using a wicked nation to work his divine purpose. God revealed that when they had served his purpose, they would be punished. The dialogue ends with the words “The Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth keep silence before him” (Habakkuk 2:20). God would judge Judah; God would judge Babylon; God will judge all the inhabitants of the earth.

When he considered God’s word and the existing conditions, Habakkuk said that his rottenness was in his boned, body tremble, his lips quivered, and his legs trembled, but he would wait quietly for the day of trouble that was coming (Habakkuk 3:16).

Habakkuk could wait patiently for the coming invasion, not because he, as had Jonah, desired the destruction of those to whom he preached, but because the Lord was his strength (Habakkuk 3:19). The Lord was his strength because he had learned that the righteous shall live by faith (Habakkuk 2:4).

Alison Krauss sings, “Many things about tomorrow I don’t seem to understand, but I know who holds tomorrow and I know who holds my hand.” Life is filled with enigmas. Some we may figure out on our own or with the help of others; some may be revealed to us in the Scriptures; some must be accepted in faith. When father Abraham was called to leave his country and his kinsmen, he went not knowing where he was going because he walked by faith, not sight (Hebrews 11:8).

When we walk by faith, we may be led to many places and into many unpleasant situations, but when we know who holds our hand, we go even if we go trembling.

CONNECTIONS

1. The author of Hebrews tells us that we should draw near to God in full assurance of faith and unwavering confidence because of what? (Hebrews 10:23)

2. Does God assure those who walk by faith that they shall have carefree lives of health and wealth? (Romans 8:34-35)
