THOUGHT FOR TODAY, JULY 14, 2017: MERCY MEETS TRUTH IN JESUS

“Mercy and truth have met together; Righteousness and peace kissed” (Psa 85:10-11, NKJV). The occasion of these words is found in verses 1-2: “Lord, you have been favorable to Your land; You have brought back the captivity of Jacob, You have forgiven the iniquity of Your people; You have covered all their sin.”

In the broader context, these words take on their highest meaning in Christ.

The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.
(Luke 4:18-19, NKJV).

Some people delight in sticking the dagger of truth into the hearts of others and twisting it. Others turn mercy into a cheap perfume, spraying it on putrefied lives stinking with sin. The truth must be spoken in love, but it must be spoken.
