THOUGHT FOR TODAY, MAY 1, 2017: MAYDAY

In many countries, May first is a holiday celebrating spring. In others, it is a workers’ holiday, comparable to America’s Labor Day.
I will forever associate May with the saying “March winds and April showers bring forth May flowers.” I have already seen a few bees and our first little hummingbird has arrived at our feeder. As the flowers of May become more profuse, so will the little creatures that pollinate them. Not only does May bring out the birds and the bees, but it is a month associated with the blossoming of love. I don’t know what month the bride had in mind when she sang, but her song certainly fits the month of May.

My beloved speaks and says to me:

“Arise, my love, my beautiful one,

and come away,
for behold,
the winter is past;

the rain is over and gone.

The flowers appear on the earth,

the time of singing has come,

and the voice of the turtledove
is heard in our land.

The fig tree ripens its figs,

and the vines are in blossom;

they give forth fragrance.

Arise, my love, my beautiful one,

and come away (Song of Solomon 2:8-12).

Sometimes we must lay aside the “heavy” theological discussions and just enjoy the flowers. With that thought in mind, I leave you with a verse from an Appalachian folk song:

This morning is the month of May,

the finest of the year.

Good people all,
both great and small,
I wish you joyful cheer.
