Proverbs 18:24

A SONG A DAY, January 5, 2020

“There’s Not a Friend”

Solomon said, “A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother” (Proverbs 18:24). James Fuller (1608-1661) wrote, “If you have one true friend, you have more than your share.” Johnson Oatman wrote the hymn “There’s Not a Friend.” These three men, separated by centuries, all understood a sometimes-painful truth: FRIENDS ARE FEW AND FAR BETWEEN. The theme is closely related to yesterday’s:

There’s not a Friend like the lowly Jesus:
No, not one! no, not one!
None else could heal all our souls’ diseases:
No, not one! no, not one!

Jesus knows all about our struggles;
He will guide ’til the day is done:
There’s not a Friend like the lowly Jesus:
No, not one! no, not one!

No friend like Him is so high and holy,
No, not one! no, not one!
And yet no friend is so meek and lowly,
No, not one! no, not one!

There’s not an hour that He is not near us,
No, not one! no, not one!
No night so dark, but His love can cheer us,
No, not one! no, not one!

Our friend is also our brother. He knows all about us and loves us anyway.
