THOUGHT FOR TODAY, JULY 17, 2017: WHO IS LIKE OUR GOD?

People are by nature believers in the supernatural, as evidenced by the fact that no primitive societies have ever been discovered that were materialists. They may have had no concept of God or even gods, but they believed in spirits and ghosts or other nonmaterial entities.

Many societies had an idea of a transcendent God, such as the Athenians who worshiped “The Unknown God.” But Paul said God is “not far from each of us” (Acts 17:27). An unnamed poet put it this way:

The Lord is high above all nations,
and his glory above the heavens!
Who is like the Lord our God,
who is seated on high,
who looks far down
on the heavens and the earth?
He raises the poor from the dust
and lifts the needy from the ash heap,
to make them sit with princes,
with the princes of his people.
He gives the barren woman a home,
making her the joyous mother of children.
Praise the Lord! (Psalm 113:4-9).

Our God is Lord of heaven and earth, but at the same time all three persons of the Godhead dwell in us: “You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the SPIRIT OF GOD DWELLS IN YOU. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if CHRIST IS IN YOU, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. If the SPIRIT OF HIM WHO RAISED JESUS FROM THE DEAD DWELLS IN YOU, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you” (Rom 8:9-11).

Indeed, who is a God like our God?
