Psalm 37:7
Durable Patience
“The single most important thing is for people to understand really how serious this (COVID-19) is, ” Randy Wycoff, Dean of Public Health at East Tennessee State University was quoted in the Kingsport Times News September 4.
We know that. But do we take this knowledge seriously? We have the knowledge: Wear facial coverings; practice social distancing; avoid crowds; wash our hands frequently. How about practicing durable patience? What’s that…durable patience? Durable patience is the sort that Jesus routinely practiced. In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus directed His disciples to “tarry ye here, and watch.” (Mark 14:34)
Of course, a swift and speedy end to the COVID-19 Pandemic would be optimal, but is it practicable? What would Jesus advise? “And he said to them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money: neither have two coats apiece.” (Luke 9:3)
Is this “durable patience?” Yes, this is the patience that trusts God to arrive right on time. God’s grace is never late. Jesus taught that the Lord God’s provision is not “on account.” The Lord God provides where and when He directs….right on time!
“Trust in the Lord, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. Delight thyself also in the Lord; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart. Commit thy way unto the Lord; trust also in him, and he shall bring it to pass.” (Psalm 37:3-5)
Jesus was never in a hurry. While the elders of a city were anxious for Jesus to teach, Christ waited for the children so that he’d “touch them.” (Mark 10:13). The Masters’ touch still remains available!
Although not one of us doesn’t long for a hasty conclusion to our present national health emergency, impatiently speeding up our personal behavior is neither wise nor practicable. “Watch” and “Wait” were common cautions Jesus advised his disciples throughout the Gospels. Mark 13:37 commands “And what I say unto you I say unto all. Watch.”
Be durable. Be patient. Be praying. Wait. He heard you.
“Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him.” (Psalm 37:7)
