Five Years Ago: A Little Child Shall Lead

“Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward…..”Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.” (Psalm 127:3 & 5)

In March of 2015, 5-year old Lily Stevens drew a picture of of my Bride, Julie, and I on either side of Depews Chapel United Methodist Church, while declaring that “God is good, all the time,” all the while adding “In his church.”

The following month, nine-year old Kayla Stevens gave Julie and me her own art, headed with “God blessed you and your family.” She declared in Acts 20:35, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” And printing just over a large heart accompanied very happy face, she shared “God has saved you and your family.”

I’ve framed and cherished these two timeless treasures from two young women who have meant so much to our Depews Chapel Family. Indeed, my quiver of blessing is full, of which I am extraordinarily glad, while the unseen enemy has both stood “outside the gate,” and has both stormed the stronghold of our health as well as of our church family’s sense of spiritual well-being!

Five years ago they were not ashamed to proclaim Jesus Christ in their young lives, boldly testifying, that God is good and alive and “a very real help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:16)

Five years ago, who had any premonition that we would be driven to our knees in desperate prayer, asking Almighty God’s help and divine intervention at our hour of need?

Five years ago years later, our need remains ever stronger to proclaim that God in Jesus Christ is our only completely reliable assistance during a frightening season of national health emergency!

Five years past, or five years to come, Lily and Kayla Stevens both brought and brings confidence into our lives, as they have illuminated the faith of their Grandparents, Carl and Suzanne Glendenning, their Mother, Christine, as well as every member of the family of God at Depews Chapel United Methodist Church!

“And a little child shall lead them.” (Isaiah 11:6)
