“All the labour of man is for his mouth, and yet the appetite is not filled.” Ecclesiastes 6:7
Jesus hallowed the workplace as he lived among people on this earth. One such occasion was when He stood onboard a busy fisherman’s boat. As His shadow fell upon the nets and fishing gear, Jesus made it holy. In fact, the workplace became a pulpit for our Savior. The same can be true for every Christian believer today.
The last thing any of us want is for our labor to be in vain. The Bible reminds us that unless the Lord is in it, all our toil will come to nothing. We are not to labor for the perishable things of this earth, but the eternal rewards.
In the Book of Revelation, John heard an angel say, “Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord from now on. They may rest from their labor. And their works do follow them.” What we do in the name of Christian love matters upon this earth. Anything done in the name of Christ has eternal value, and will live on in the ones who follow us.
The poem “Only One Life” by C. T. Studd is a great reminder. These are the opening lines:
“Two little lines I heard one day,
Traveling along life’s busy way,
And from my mind would not depart,
Only one life, twill soon be past.
Only what’s done for God will last.”
