1 Peter 1:8
DEVOTION FOR TODAY
“…you rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory.”
Those words easily describe yesterday’s worship and fellowship at First United Methodist Church in Bluefield Virginia. They were celebrating their one hundred years of sharing the Gospel from that location. Pat and I were thrilled to be a part of it. I don’t know when I have been so happy.
The pipe organ, that had been badly damaged, was once again making joyful praise to God. In a way it was a parable of the entire experience of worship and fellowship. There have been some tough times for the congregation, but they have rediscovered the joy of the Lord that is their strength.
It is said that you cannot go back to the way things once were. That is true, but yesterday came very close. I read in the Bible how the Lord loves to fill our lives with good things; he certainly did that yesterday. Our cups ran over with the Spirit of the Lord, the Love of friends and loved ones, and memories most precious.
The sermon text said, “they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings of eagles…” When storm winds blow, the eagle spreads it’s wings and flies into it allowing the wind to lift it higher.
We spread our wings by faithfully waiting on the Lord. We put our hands to the work that God has assigned us, give our best to the Savior, worship, pray and praise. We wait because we know that in his time:
“He will raise you up on eagles’ wings
Bear you on the breath of dawn
Make you to shine like the sun
And hold you in the palm of His hand.”
