“Come and have breakfast” John 21:1-12

We are having breakfast at our church this morning. There have been many breakfast fellowships over the years. There was one that I will never forget.

It was after midnight when the phone rang. As I answered it, I heard a sad voice say, “Sam is dead, what must I do?” I went to the house where a love story of fifty-seven years had just finished the last chapter. After making the necessary calls, and when the funeral transport had driven away, only Bessie, a friend of the family, and I remained at the old farmhouse. The three of us sat through the rest of the night and waited for the day.

As day was breaking, we heard pots and pans rattling in the kitchen. “Don’t do that,” we said to Bessie, “You do not need to cook breakfast.” With a kind and firm voice, she said to us, “I have made breakfast every day since Sam and I married, and I’m not going to stop now.”

We got out of the kitchen and waited until we heard the words, “Come and have breakfast.” It was a Holy Meal that ushered in a new day for a woman whose faith had taught her that life must go on.

The night was long, empty and dark for the fishermen in the boat. On the shore Jesus the resurrected Lord was cooking breakfast; death did not stop him from living. Can you imagine eating a breakfast that Jesus prepared? I doubt that anyone said, “No thanks, I’m not hungry.”

“Come and dine.” Those words are an invitation to anyone who has a hunger for a life that this world cannot give. Jesus said, “Blessed are those who have a hunger for a right relationship with God for they shall be filled.” He has been offering that meal of life since the beginning of the gospel, and He isn’t going to stop now.

“Come and dine,” the Master calleth, “Come and dine”
You may feast at Jesus’ table all the time.
He Who fed the multitude, turned the water into wine,
To the hungry calleth now, “Come and dine.”

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
