Matthew 14:30

Peter was neither on top of the water or sunk. He was “beginning to sink.” How many of us understand what “beginning to sink” is like? The wonderful thing about this scripture is the hope that it gives. We do not have to sink; there is someone on whom we can call.

How did this happen to one who was doing so well with his walk of faith? It was not that he did not want to walk with Jesus, or that it was impossible. I am afraid I understand all too well what happened to Peter. The scripture did not say that he took his eyes off Jesus, it only says, “seeing the wind he began to sink.” Many times we have faith problems because we try watching the storm and Jesus at the same time.

We can walk with Jesus and at the same time pay too much attention to the wind (or the problem it represents). When we focus on the wind we begin to sink. We may have kept on walking through the storms and trials of life. We may have desperately tried to keep believing, keep the faith. What happened to us that made us begin to sink? Did we see the wind and fear its power?

It was a short yet amazingly effective prayer, “LORD SAVE ME!” Jesus was so close that He immediately reached out and took hold of him. I do not think they swam back to the boat, but Peter walked hand in hand with Jesus, and so can we.

“He is always there, hearing every prayer, faithful and true. Walking by our side, in His love we hide, all the day through. When you get discouraged, just remember what to do. Reach out to Jesus, He’s reaching out to you.”
