Our God is an Expert Gardener of the Soul
“Make sure there is no root among you that bears such poisonous and bitter fruit…” Deuteronomy 29:18
It would be foolish to put fertilizer on poison oak, yet we do it sometimes. I am talking about the poison oak of negative thoughts and words that spread an unnecessary rash that irritates our soul. It is also highly contagious.
To dwell in the gossip patch, and to rehearse our aches and pains wherever we can corner someone with an ear is one way to spread it. Constant gloom and doom are a miserable conversation. Soon, everyone else will get to scratching also.
There is a better garden for all of us. He can restore the wasteland of our life to the garden it was meant to be.
“The LORD will surely comfort Zion and will look with compassion on all her ruins; he will make her deserts like Eden, her wastelands like the garden of the LORD. Joy and gladness will be found in her, thanksgiving, and the sound of singing.” Isaiah 51:3
Our God is an expert gardener of the soul. He alone has the power to remove the root of sin’s poisonous and bitter vine. No one’s life needs to be wasted.
A positive attitude is a choice we make. I may not change the world, but neither does the world have to change me. When it comes to our heart, each one of us will decide if it will be the “Garden of the Lord,” or a weed patch.
“There’s a garden where Jesus is waiting,
There’s a place that is wondrously fair;
For it glows with the light of His presence,
’Tis that beautiful garden of prayer.
Oh, the beautiful garden, the garden of prayer,
Oh, the beautiful garden of prayer;
There my Savior awaits, and He opens the gates
To the beautiful garden of prayer.”
