“Let it be twilight just a little longer…Don’t turn the light up yet; Twilight’s a time for remembering, twilight’s a time to forget; a decompression chamber where the soul can un-begin, and slowly rise tonight.” -Ruth Bell Graham
“The chimes of time ring out the news
Another day is through
Someone slipped and fell
Was that someone you?”
I find something very comforting as the shadows of twilight begin to gather around. In the evening when I watch the darkness hide the busyness of the day, and lights begin to punch holes in the darkness, peace comes like the voice of God whispering through the trees.
Sometimes it is pleasant to sit in quiet reverie and squeeze the last bit of light out of the day. In a society that makes so much out of recreation, time off, and getting away; we still seem to be tired and wound tight most days.
We live through pressure packed days; many of them our own creation and unnecessary. Clearing the mind is necessary for a peaceful night. We need, as the poem says, an “Un-beginning,” a healing time when we both remember and forget.
If you are frazzled by life’s demands, wearied by its problems, exhausted from its pressures, find a twilight time to put things into perspective. Ask God to help you with your burdens, and hear him say, “Come unto me, all you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” If sinful words and deeds trouble your sleep; “Do not be disheartened for I have news for you:
It is no secret what God can do
What he’s done for others, he’ll do for you
With arms wide open, he’ll pardon you
It is no secret what God can do.”
