Proverbs 15:13

DEVOTION FOR TODAY, August 30, 2019

“A joyful heart makes a cheerful face, but when the heart is sad, the spirit is broken.”

We were riding the elevator to the top floor of a tall hotel in Nashville to look out at the city. Just as the door was about to close, a woman jumped on. She was frustrated and trying to go down to the ground level and catch the ride that she was about to miss. She was not a happy person when the elevator started going up. I guess that we should not have told her that we were riding for fun. When we got to the top and the door was closing to go back down, she was not saying, “Have a nice day.”

Because of visiting hospitals I ride a lot of elevators. It is interesting how people will not speak, or make eye contact when they ride on one. I think that they are good folks, but just want to get to where they are going.

I was on a crowded elevator when a man squeezed in. He was a happy sort who could even put a smile on the lady who seemed to take pride in being sour faced. He got some chuckles, and I noticed the claustrophobic tension that some had was easing. As he got off he said, “God bless every one of you, and may your last ride be up!”

Some people are like a thermometer. They measure the temperature of the room, but change nothing. Others are like a thermostat that can change the temperature of a troubled and unhappy soul. Lord, make me a thermostat for you today.

“What a wonderful change in my life has been wrought
Since Jesus came into my heart!
I have light in my soul for which long I had sought,
Since Jesus came into my heart!”

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
