ADVENT Day 12

“And when they had entered, they went up into the upper room where they were staying…These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus…” Acts 1:13-14

So much had happened in such a short time. Perhaps she would have been around forty-five. There she was in an upper room of waiting people. Her voice was silent, and this would be the last time she would be mentioned. He was gone now, “in a better place,” people so easily say. At least she knew that he would never be treated with such anger and hate ever again, but she still missed him. “Someday” she would hold him again, but now, memories would have to do.

Some in the room had been faithfully by his side for a few years, but God had formed him in her womb. Miraculous was the word for his birth. She was the only one who had been with him from his first breath to his last.

He was there at the beginning of everything, “All things were made by him.” He became flesh and lived like ordinary folks. Mary’s baby was first her creator.

It was written that Mary “kept all these things and pondered them in her heart.” Who could have imagined the path she would walk? “You are blessed among women,” That’s what Gabriel had said to her. Life had taught her that having favor with God is mixed with laughter and tears. She spoke only a few words that were recorded and slipped away from the story as quietly as she had entered.

Mary taught us all by example. A blessed life begins with a “YES” to the will of God. Then you live that “YES” from beginning to end. She gave us only one sentence of instruction; and we would do will to follow it: “Whatever Jesus tells you to do, do it.” John 2:5

“Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Is Lord of all creation?
Mary, did you know that your baby boy
Would one day rule the nations?
Did you know that your baby boy
Is heaven’s perfect Lamb?
That sleeping child you’re holding is the great, I Am.”

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
