Psalm 46:10
DEVOTION FOR TODAY, July 10, 2019
“Be still and know that I am God…”
The thought of blessed quietness and a time of devotion in a peaceful setting seem so pleasant. Sometimes it is greatly needed in our lives; however, that isn’t the context of these words. To read them that way is comforting, but not powerful.
The Psalm is about the believer’s confidence in God. It is like a voice of authority that speaks up in a room of panic and chaos, “Everyone, be quiet and calm down!”
Similar words were spoken by Moses when the people were caught between the enemy and the Red Sea. “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the LORD’s salvation…The LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.”
“Be still,” child of God. Hold your ground; trust the Lord no matter what!
To the forces of hell, God demands, “Be still, give it up, and lay down your weapon. Calvary has prevailed. It’s time that the gates of hell fail, the darkness vanish; and the Lord is exalted in our lives. God is with us;
Sometimes our greatest witness is not in our talking, but in our being still.
“Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side.
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain.
Leave to thy God to order and provide;
In every change, He faithful will remain.”
