Luke 2:16
“…So they came in a hurry and found their way to Mary and Joseph, and the baby as He lay in the manger.”
“BEHOLD THE LAMB OF GOD”
The young soldier had traveled a great distance to be with family and friends, but they were all too busy to see him. “In a few short days he would be deployed to a battlefield. Are we willing to go a short distance for passing friends who have traveled a long lonely road to be with those they love?
What if the shepherds had said to the angels: “We would love to see Jesus. Perhaps Mary can bring Him out for a visit.” An Advent question is, “How much do we really want to see Jesus?” The shepherds taught us the proper response to the Gospel. Leave your post, hurry and behold the Lamb of God.
The shepherds said, “Let us go and see this thing that has come to pass.” Can we do any less? While we sing, “Be near me Lord Jesus, I ask thee to stay close by me forever and love me I pray;” May we also remember the scripture that says, “Draw close to God, and he will draw close to you.”
The shepherds returned to the fields praising God for what they had experienced. They were glad that they had gone the short distance to know the Savior of the world.
There is a beautiful song about a misplaced shepherd figurine in a nativity. He pleads for someone to move him closer to the child. It is called “The Shepherd’s Prayer: ‘Move me closer, move me closer, move me closer to the child. Let me see him, let me hold his hand. Move me closer to the child.”
O Holy Spirit, move us closer to our coming King!
