Black Friday vs Good Friday

“…I have learned how to be content with whatever I have.”

“Philippians 4:11”

Today is “Black Friday.” Does that mean that Thanksgiving is over? If contentment had a color, what would it be? I think I would choose green. “He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters.”

What a miraculous feast they had yesterday! Jesus had fed a multitude of over four thousand from a small lunch, but that was yesterday. This was the next day and the disciples were in an argument because someone had forgotten to bring bread (see Matthew 16:1-10). “Do you not understand or remember what I did yesterday?” Jesus asked.

Yesterday we ate our bountiful Thanksgiving meal, and we talked about our blessings and reasons for being thankful, but today is “Black Friday.” It is a day of shopping and great bargains, but also a day known for long lines and short tempers.

Perhaps today is a good day for Christians to shop. What a great opportunity to demonstrate the more excellent way of Christ’s Love. The Bible instructs us to do whatever we do for the glory of God (even shopping).

It’s Black Friday, the day when retailers hope to get out of the red and into the black. There is also a Good Friday when Jesus died on the cross. Because of His loving sacrifice our debt of sin is paid. He offers “Salvation and eternal life,” now that is something to get up early and get in line for. Jesus said, “I Love You,” and He wrote it in red. There is an unlimited supply.

“All this world, its wealth and honor,
Cannot satisfy the human breast;
But when filled with God, our Father,
Every want is fully blessed.

My soul is satisfied,
My soul is satisfied;
I am complete in Jesus love.”

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
