Romans 14:21

DEVOTION FOR TODAY, January 8, 2020

“It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything to cause your brother to stumble.”

We have become such an “I demand to have my way” society that we can become calloused to the weak and vulnerable soul of others. A man said that he didn’t care about what other people thought. It is true that what another person thinks should not necessarily control our actions; but neither should we come to the place of not caring.

As Christian we accept the responsibility of being a witness for Christ. We are an influence that may be strong enough to mark the course of someone’s life (good or bad).

In Paul’s day the problem for some was eating food sacrificed to idols. He was mature in his faith, he knew an idol was not a real god, and the meat was prime choice. Paul had no problem eating it, but others were struggling with it, and it was a serious matter of faith for them.

To look down a spiritual nose at them would have wounded their conscience, and would be sin to him. He determined that their soul was more important than his appetite; and if eating the meat was a stumbling block, he wouldn’t eat it.

God save us from flaunting our sins just because we think that we can (Neither sin or righteousness are for flaunting). There is much that we will give account for some day; and I don’t want to discover that I had a sinful pride that caused someone to fall.

When it comes to the Christian walk; what are others learning from our example? If our children and grandchildren turn out like us; who will they be?

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
