Jeremiah 12:5

THOUGHT FOR TODAY, November 22, 2019

“If you have raced with men on foot and they have worn you out, how can you compete with horses?”

This is probably not a verse that many in our culture will memorize. It strikes a blow against our whining mentality. Our conversations too often don’t get past the surface issues like what’s hurting today, who said what, how busy we are etc. Even worse is that our conversation with God gets hung up with these things also.

I am amazed at the difference between prayers in the book of Acts, and praying today. There were no complaints, no informing God on how unfair life and others had been treating them; but their prayers were for boldness and the power to keep their witness no matter what happened.

An old poem says, “Large petitions with thee bring, for thou art coming to a king.” I have often failed to pray big enough because I corralled my faith to only what I could imagine God doing. We serve the God who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine.

The old man watched as a well was being drilled for his grandson’s new house. They hit water without having to drill very deep. The young man was thrilled to save the money that it would have cost to go deeper. “Keep drilling,” the old man said as his grandson protested. “This water will be gone the first dry spell that comes,” the man explained. “If you want water when the droughts and hard times come, you have got to go deeper.”

If we want to make it through the hard trials and accomplish the work of Christ, we must have a faith that goes deeper and gets us past the surface aggravations and nuisances of everyday life. The well of living water is abundant in supply, but we must pray deep enough to get to it.

“Nearer to Thee I want to be. I want to dig a little deeper in the store-house of his love, God’s love Ooh, I want to shine with love sublime I want to dig a little deeper in the store-house of God’s love.”

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
