“The whole Israelite community set out from the Desert of Sin, traveling from place to place as the LORD commanded. They camped at Rephidim, but there was no water for the people to drink.” Exodus 17:1
It is interesting that the Lord led the children of Israel to a dry place. In our way of thinking it would seem that God would want His children to be satisfied with water. Jesus offered it to the woman at the well, and Heaven advertises water from the fountain of life. Yet, these people were led to a place where there was no water to drink.
We take many things for granted. The danger with abundance is the temptation to stop depending on God. It is not just the hungry who are told to pray for daily bread; it is also expected of those who have bread and enough to spare. We all must learn that whatever we need, we first need the Lord more.
Even though they didn’t find water at Rephidim, they found a valuable supply of “LONGING” for God’s care. We all need a daily longing in our hearts. When it is not there, our love for Christ and His church will soon go with it. Being led to a dry place is the right place when it turns into Living Water from the Rock.
“I have a longing in my heart for Jesus,
I have a longing in my heart for Him;
Although I know His presence lingers near me,
I have a longing just to see His face.
To you who do not know this man named Jesus,
You’ve never lived or found life’s greatest joy;
Oh, won’t you now take Him as Lord and Saviour,
And know the fullness of His matchless love?”
