Psalm 84:3
DEVOTION FOR TODAY, January 21, 2020
“Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may have her young— a place near your altar, LORD Almighty, my King and my God.”
It is not unusual to go into a large store and see a little bird that has gotten inside. If it gets to the patio and birdseed department it may think that it is in Heaven. Neither is it difficult to imagine sparrows finding a good hiding place in the temple.
The psalmist wrote, “Even the sparrow has found a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may have her young— a place near your altar, LORD Almighty, my King and my God.” Psalm 84:3
“We have found a home;” how I love hearing those words from newcomers to our church. We all need a home near the altar; a place near to the heart of God. It is especially important to note the words about a spiritual home where we can raise our young.
Many of us were blessed to be raised in the church. It is true that some have gone away from their upbringing. It is also true that a great number of them have come back home because there was something missing in their lives that could only be satisfied by being a part of the church. Like the prodigal they can remember how it is at home, and can say, “I will arise and go to my Father.”
There are others who grew up without a church home, and do not know the Gospel. When things go wrong, hearts are broken, and death knocks on the doors of loved ones; how will they know that they have a home to go to? How will they know what a church family can be like?
Sharing the Gospel is letting others know that there is room for them in the family of God. Is there someone that you can help find home?
“Though millions have found Him a friend,
And have turned from the sins they have sinned,
The Savior still waits to open the gates
And welcomes a sinner before it’s too late.
There’s room at the cross for you.”
