Isaiah 40:28

THOUGHT FOR TODAY, January 30, 2021

“The Everlasting God, the Lord, the creator of the ends of the earth, neither faints or grows weary…”

There was a time that being set free from Exile, and told that you could return home, would have been the most exciting news ever; but not now. The Lord said, “Comfort my people, tell them that their penalty has been served.” That should have been good news, but was it?

I will never forget once when serving as a volunteer prison chaplain. We were having Sunday afternoon worship and an elderly prisoner was so distressed. He was being set free the next day. He had spent most of his life in prison, it was his home; he was afraid to be free in a changed world where he had long been forgotten.

The captives were too old and tired to go back. How do you pack up so many years and move back on foot? That is when you pray: “Precious Lord, take my hand, lead me on, let me stand, I’m tired, I’m weak, I’m alone. Through the storm, through the night, lead me on to the light; take my hand, precious Lord, Lead me home.”

We find our strength in trusting. It seems that we learn this better as we grow older. I remember as a child hearing my Grandmother say, “I’m no count for anything anymore.” I was young and energetic with no reference to realize what she was saying. Now, I understand her words a little better.

Reading today’s text provides us the incentive to press on in our journey of life. And, when we feel like we are too tired to take another step, this is what we must do: rest in the hands of God. He who keeps us never faints or grows weary. “They that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.”

We all have good and bad days; and times that are enjoyable while others are wearied. Pat and I have found the singing of Larnelle Harris to be comforting and encouraging. We especially love this song:

“It’s not in trying but in trusting,
It’s not in running but in resting,
Not in wondering but in praying,
That we find the strength of the Lord”

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray.
