Proverbs 3:5

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.”

“You are not going to do that with your good shirt on!” The kitchen drain was stopped up and it was an easy fix. Five minutes max, and no mess. Pat doesn’t always appreciate my “fix it yourself” skills. I explained to her that it was a drain with no pressure on it. I could remove the cap, clean it, and we would be on our way to church. It took less than five minutes to drain the sink; in fact the line was totally unplugged much faster that I could have imagined. The only problem was that the yucky mess was all over my face and shirt. Every husband knows the rest of the story.

How many times have we attempted to fix some situation and managed to make things worse? A little “I told you,” and some laundry detergent can clean a shirt; but it isn’t so easy with some of the other things in life.

She was new on the factory job. The foreman said, “If you have a problem, call me.” She did have problems, but nothing that she couldn’t handle herself. Soon she was in over her head. “I did the best I could,” she told him. “No you didn’t,” he said; “If you had done the best you could you would have called me.”

“Lord, how many times have I come into your presence with a tangled mess of my own management? Wrong words can grow like poison oak, a sparky reaction sets fields on fire, and good intentions can pave a road to hell. Today, I pray that I can do the best I can: I give it all to Thee. Amen”

The Song says it well: “Are you tired of chasing pretty rainbows? Are you tired of spinning round and round? Wrap up all the shattered dreams of your life, and at the feet of Jesus lay them down. Give them all, give them all to Jesus: Shattered dreams, wounded hearts, and broken toys. He will turn your sorrows into joy.”
