Isaiah 40:31

DEVOTION FOR TODAY, January 18, 2020

“Those who wait for the LORD Will gain new strength; they will mount up with wings like eagles, they will run and not get tired, they will walk and not become weary.”

I read somewhere that some prayers take flight like a supersonic airplane. They go fast and to the heights. Most of my prayers are more like an old crop-duster: hard to get cranked up, they don’t go so fast, and they cover a lot of the same ground over and over. I’m not even sure that they go so high; but I know that in grace he reaches down to however high they go, and gently lifts them the rest of the way.

I have worked on an aircraft launch crew, and I can assure you that if the groundwork is not done, the plane will not fly. Even an airplane, with all its power of flight and speed, is useless without ground service. What is our spiritual groundwork? I would suggest that it starts with two things. Seek the Lord with your whole heart, and not just your head. (Jeremiah 29:13) The second is to humble yourself in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up. (James 4:10)

Are we guilty of trying to reach the heights in our Christian life without a personal prayer life? Do we want to go to heaven without taking the Heavenly highway in this life? Will we be glad to worship God there if we are not glad to attend the house of the Lord here? We can accomplish some things by hard work, but it we intend to reach heavenly places we must seek it in prayer.

The days we are living in are demanding and drain our spirit and resources. Even today many things are already waiting for us to do. Let’s make sure that we are up to date in our walk with God.

“From sinking sand He lifted me,
With tender hand He lifted me;
From shades of night to plains of light,
Oh, praise His Name, He lifted me!

Now on a higher plane I dwell,
And with my soul I know ’tis well;
Yet how or why, I cannot tell,
He should have lifted me.”

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
