Ephesians 6:17
DEVOTION FOR TODAY, September 7, 2020
“Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.”
Two brothers who were soldiers talked early in the morning. It would be over soon after the dawn, and victory was certain. It was like a pit bull coming up against a chihuahua; there was no way they could lose this fight. The younger one asked, “Do you really think that it will be that easy?” The older warrior laughed with a gruffness that echoed through the valley; “We are seasoned soldiers with weapons and armor. They are a ragtag poorly equipped army who tremble when I roar.”
Across the hill a young man prayed as he skipped rocks in a stream and anticipated the day. It would be over soon, and God would prevail. He could do this with the help of God. It was written in history, the words of his unchanging God: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9)
Daylight was breaking through the night; so, he finished praying on his armor, put some stones in his pocket, and went to face the foe. “I will fear no evil, for you are with me.”
Back in the other camp the overly confident soldier stood and took his sword in hand. He sure was a giant of a man and a bully who intimidated the best of soldiers just by the sound of his voice. The younger one asked, “Aren’t you going to wear your helmet?” “You know I neither like it nor need it. That young man will never get that close. It is enough talk, time to go.”
He walked toward what he knew was a sure victory. His helmet in the tent with his name written on it, “Goliath.”
Soldiers of the cross, it is written in the Bible. Before we face the day remember that we should pray; and never forget that no matter how big our enemy, our God is greater; and Satan may be mighty, but God is almighty. One more thing, before you go out, be sure to put on the whole armor of God.
Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
