Luke 6:38
When Abundance Comes Give
“Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you fully pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.”
“I’ve never made a fortune,
and It’s probably too late now.
but I don’t worry about that much,
I’m happy anyhow,
and as I go along life’s journey,
I’m reaping better than I sow.
I’m drinking from my saucer,
Because my cup has overflowed”
Do you remember cups overflowing into the saucer? That once seemed to be a way of life. Whether it was a cup of coffee, or folks sharing their garden produce, fruit, and food, they made sure that they heaped it up. If stinginess wasn’t a sin, it had to be a first cousin to it. It wasn’t the way of God, and neither was it the way of most of the good down to earth people we knew.
What comes first, abundance or generosity? Hasn’t our Lord made that plain: “Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you fully pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.” (Luke 6:38)
In the Kingdom of God, life is joyfully shared. There is no shortage of love and laughter, or kindness and compassion. When it comes to goodness, no one can out-give God.
I have heard givers often say, “Let’s throw in a little extra for good measure.” Jesus taught us that as Christians we are to be “Go the extra mile” people. This may mean taking a little extra time to be friendly or offer a helping hand where we can. This is the way of life in the Kingdom of God; is it the way of life for us?
Now, before we get on with our day; do we have some time that we can just be still, and have a cup of blessing with the Lord? Thank him for all the blessings as you count them. Can you name them one by one? And o yes, don’t forget to sip from the saucer. I promise you that your cup has overflowed.
Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
