Mark 6:3

THOUGHT FOR TODAY, September 23, 2019

“Isn’t this the carpenter? Isn’t this Mary’s son?”

This evening Pat and I will return to a church that has been a wonderful part of our life. It was one of three churches that made up the Graham Circuit (our second appointment for seven years). Many of the people we knew then are now among the great crowd of witnesses in Heaven. One was Mr. Cain, who was perhaps the last WWI veteran that I can remember.

He was a young man forced into a war he didn’t want to be a part of. He often told me about being the only survivor in a foxhole that had been gassed. All he could do was to look up at heaven and cry, “Why?” God was silent, and after the war the soldier returned home, but had a hard time.

He never forgot a man who gave him a job, and helped him return to a normal life. The man was a carpenter, who taught him the skills of the trade. That person was also Jewish, and he had befriended a lost soul who had returned from war. Mr. Cain always liked to say that a Jewish Carpenter helped him build his life back.

I was blessed to be his pastor those many years ago. When I knew him, he was well along in years, and had lived a faithful Christian life. He loved to stand up in church and tell of his redeemer. He never stopped giving praise to Jesus. He would say that he had been twice saved, and each time by a Jewish Carpenter.

Most of us have been blessed with people who have helped us have a chance (and a second chance) for a good life. People who gave, encouraged, and went the extra mile to help us.

I recommend this same Jewish Carpenter to you. His teachings are the Foundation we build on. He is the Cornerstone by which we line up our lives. He is the Door through which we go in and out, the Light in the house, the Bread on the table, and the Water in the well.

The song says, “I would love to tell you what I think of Jesus … I would tell you how He changed my life completely; He did something no other friend could do. No one ever cared for me like Jesus; there’s no other friend so kind as He. No one else could take the sin and darkness from me; O how much He cared for me.”

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
