A Morning Prayer

Numbers 14:4

And they said to each other, “We should choose a leader and go back to Egypt.”

Lord, you know how I love to reminisce about those “Good Ole Days.” There are people, times, and a way of life that I miss. I know it is true Lord that back then I was praying to get through and out of some of those same days. How do you put up with a never satisfied people? Your children pleaded to be free from bondage, and you set them free. The first bit of discomfort turned their dreams for tomorrow into glamorized memories of yesterday; and then the joy of their “today” was never known.

This is what the LORD says: “You will be in Babylon for seventy years. But then I will come and do for you all the good things I have promised and I will bring you home again. For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:10-11

Yes Lord, I love the plans that you have for us; can we hurry and get there. It is that seventy year comment that I am afraid of. Life isn’t the way that it used to be; and neither is it what it is going to be. So Lord, help me live my life today, and walk with you along the narrow way. The flowers still bloom and the birds still sing; the sun comes up and Christ is King.

Paul learned to be content whatever the circumstances. Some days I think I have learned it too, and other days I feel like a failing student in the classroom of life. Lord, this is the day that you have made, and I don’t want to waste it. I know that it will not return but vanish like a balloon set free.

My soul sings the lyrics of an old song from back in the day: “…A million tomorrows shall all pass away, ‘ere I forget all the joy that is mine, today. I can’t be contented with yesterday’s glory, I can’t live on promises winter to spring. Today is my moment, and now is my story, I’ll laugh and I’ll cry and I’ll sing.” Lord, Thank you for today. Amen.

Today, while the blossoms still cling to the vine
I’ll taste your strawberries, I’ll drink your sweet wine
A million tomorrows shall all pass away
‘Ere I forget all the joy that is mine, Today

I’ll be a dandy, and I’ll be a rover
You’ll know who I am by the songs that I sing
I’ll feast at your table, I’ll lay in your clover
Who cares what tomorrow may bring

Today, while the blossoms still cling to the vine
I’ll taste your strawberries, I’ll drink your sweet wine
A million tomorrows shall all pass away
‘Ere I forget all the joy that is mine, Today

I can’t be contented with yesterday’s glory
I can’t live on promises winter to spring
For this is my moment, and this is my story
I’ll laugh and I’ll cry and I’ll sing

Today, while the blossoms still cling to the vine
I’ll taste your strawberries, I’ll drink your sweet wine
A million tomorrows shall all pass away
‘Ere I forget all the joy that is mine, Today

Today, while the blossoms still cling to the vine
I’ll taste your strawberries, I’ll drink your sweet wine
A million tomorrows shall all pass away
‘Ere I forget all the joy that is mine, Today
