Acts 8:30
DEVOTION FOR TODAY, November 9, 2020
“Acts 8:30-31 – Then Philip ran up to the chariot and heard the man reading Isaiah the prophet. ‘Do you understand what you are reading?’ Philip asked. ‘How can I,’ he said, ‘unless someone explains it to me?”
Our granddaughter once told us about her mother getting confused with the traffic pattern at a school. She said, “We could not find our way out so we could go in.” Those words, and the way she said them, stayed with me. She did not intend to be a little theologian, but she explained in one sentence the problem that sin has caused, and our need for a Savior.
To be lost in sin means that we cannot find our own way out of the confusion and the mess that it has created. It is like we are in the fast lane of a busy highway that is going nowhere. We see the exit, but we cannot get to it. We cannot find our way out of our situation so that we can enter the life that God has for us.
That is what makes the Gospel to be “Good News.” Jesus came to make a way for us to get out and come in. “I am the way, follow me,” are His words to a lost world. This is the place of difficulty for us. It is one thing to know that I need to follow Christ, but can someone tell me how to get started?
It begins when we are ready to take our hands off the wheel and say, “Jesus, I can’t do this by myself anymore, please take control of my life.” I would suggest that we practice the presence of God throughout the day. In every situation remember that the Lord is near; trust His presence.
Pick up the Bible once again. Are we willing to believe that these words are from the very breath of God, and are the only words that can be completely trusted to show us the way to go?
The man in today’s text needed someone to help him understand the word of God. We all need someone to help us find our direction. Give thanks to the Lord for the people who are willing to sit beside us when times are tough and confusing. People need the Lord; and people need each other.
Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
