The woman said, I know that the messiah is coming. When he comes he will explain everything to us.” Then Jesus said, “I who speak to you am he.” John 4:25-26
The woman had an appointment with Christ. The place was a well in Samaria, and the hour was noon which was the hottest part of the day. Jesus often meets us in our place of toil and when our burden seems the heaviest. Divine appointments usually come during the mundane activities of life and without trumpet blast. A wearied Jesus waits at the well. Whatever her reason for coming at this hour, she was unexpectedly about to meet God.
The Christian faith is about a “Common Cup.” Jesus’ request for a drink of water astonished the woman because he would have to drink from her cup. Jesus drank from the cup of our sinful lives so that we might drink the living water of God.
The woman got to know God personally. That is what He wants for all of us. When she met Jesus he was first a stranger, then a prophet, and finally her Christ. She broke through the barriers of religion and tradition to have a personal relationship with the Lord.
So many people come to Christ and leave behind what they have been clinging to. She left her water pot at the well. Christianity is not about giving up things, but rather, leaving the empty things behind in exchange for the abundance of life.
The old gospel song says it best: “Drinking at the springs of living water, Happy now am I, My soul they satisfy …O wonderful and bountiful supply.”
