Psalm 119:11

“John Wesley’s thoughts on the Bible”

“O give me that BOOK! At any price give me the BOOK of GOD. Here is knowledge enough for me. Let me be A man of one BOOK.” (John Wesley’s thoughts on the Bible)

Some people read the Bible as a letter from home. These surely share a relationship with their Heavenly Father. They are not interested in dissecting the Bible, but simply holding it close to their heart because the sender is Love. We will always study and learn more of his precious word, yet it is good to know that we do not have to be scholars to understand it.

“Have a childlike faith” is the guidance of God to those who say they cannot understand. With such faith God’s Word comes alive. Like living water, it springs up in our soul. We can splash and immerse in its bountiful supply.

When I was a child, I understood from the Bible what a child needed to understand. It was meaningful for a young man’s life. It meets us at every stage of our life.

Entering Divinity School, my Pentecostal friend and mentor said to me. “Learn all that you can, and approach your education like eating fish: “keep the meat and throw out the bones.” He was right.

Now, I am retired, and I am discovering a new blessing. It is not necessary any longer to handle my Bible like a tool of the trade. I have found the joy of reading it like one reads an old love letter. It still gives me goosebumps.

“O Lord, your word have I hidden in my heart. It is sweeter than honey and the Mana of each new day.”

Dear friend, reach over and hold your Bible like one holds the hand of God; and hold it in your heart.

The B-I-B-L-E,
Yes that’s the book for me;
I stand alone on the Word of God,
The B-I-B-L-E.

Grace and Peace, Rev Ray
